What are the greatest challenges to women's and young people's health and rights?
Cultural norms that underpin discriminatory attitudes towards women. Violence against women is accepted in society, and higher authorities are reluctant to take action when it comes to the abuse of women. Women also face discrimination when accessing work.
What actions are you taking to make the world safer and healthier for women and young people?
I am involved in a Church-based youth group called Christ at Colleger's Heart (CATCH) at the Nairobi Baptist Church. This group works to sensitize women to their rights and encourage them to voice their cries. We campaign against the crude cultures that undermine women, such as female genital mutilation. We also campaign for the girl child education by addressing more thoroughly the underlying human rights abuses that also render women at risk of violence.
I also work for a local radio station called Transworld Radio, where I produce programs about HIV/AIDS, youth in the slums, drug abuse, and other social issues.
What are your dreams for yourself and for the world's youth?
I dream of a world where people will be able to voice their cries without fear of victimization. I dream of a time when everyone will be living in a safe place, away from any form of violence or criminal activity. Above all, I dream of a time when a respect for women's rights will be observed at all levels.
