Adolescent Girls in the Developing World

bruce304On Wednesday, December 5, 2012, IWHC hosted a Leadership Council luncheon featuring a conversation between IWHC President Françoise Girard and Judith Bruce, senior associate and policy analyst with the Population Council's Poverty, Gender, and Youth program, on how to help the most vulnerable young girls in the developing world survive.

Judith stressed that a safe community space for girls—where they can gather with other girls—is an essential element of any program for them. Without this space, very little of sustained value to girls is possible. Within this platform we can equip girls with protective assets, including: a group of supportive friends and a female adult mentor from the community, basic knowledge about reproductive rights and health, basic knowledge about local services, a safety plan, and financial literacy (including savings). The success of these programs should be measured at the level of the girl, by determining if participants have actually acquired these key assets.
