Statement by IWHC President Adrienne Germain on the Passing of Founding Board Member Richard Gamble Print E-mail
“The staff and board of the International Women’s Health Coalition are deeply saddened by the loss of our friend and supporter Dick Gamble.

“Dick was a relatively little known but powerful leader for women's reproductive health and rights in poor countries. In the 1970's, as the leader of the Pathfinder Fund, he was way ahead of his times in making access to early safe abortion possible for women in Bangladesh.

“In the 1980s, as an early IWHC Board member, he again helped lead innovation in the field, helping ensure that IWHC had the financial and organizational strength to make women's health and human rights central to global population policy. In subsequent years, as IWHC continued its work to promote and protect the sexual and reproductive rights and health of women and young people, Dick’s personal interest and moral support heightened our courage and renewed our energy.

“Dick never claimed credit for his work. His reward came from bolstering the work of others.  His devotion, his compassion for women and his modest style of leadership helped set the international population field on a track suited for the 21st century - one based on human rights and aimed to meet the needs of women and girls, not only to control their childbearing but also to deliver wanted babies safely, free of violence, disease and discrimination.

“We send our heartfelt condolences to Dick’s wife Nicki and his family.  Dick is an integral part of IWHC’s history and accomplishments, and we will miss his very special commitment to securing a just and healthy life for every woman and girl.”
