AIDS is Still a Threat

RE: "U.N. to Cut Estimate of AIDS Epidemic"
To the Editor:
The reduced estimates of HIV-AIDS's prevalence by the United Nations'
AIDS agency [front page, Nov. 20] must not detract from the world's
effort to stem the HIV-AIDS pandemic. Even if the epidemic has been
"ebbing," 33 million people are living with HIV-AIDS, and 2.5 million
new infections occur each year.
Women and youths are most vulnerable: Several thousand youths are infected each day, and rates of infection among women are increasing in all regions. We must ensure access to prevention and treatment for all.
