"USAID's Reactionary Policies and the Case of Emergency Contraception in Peru" published by PROMSEX

Published in September, 2007 by IWHC's partner in Peru, the Center for the Promotion and Defense of Sexual and Reproductive Rights (PROMSEX), this 32-page informational booklet details the negative effects of USAID policy on reproductive health programs in Peru. The publication provides an overview of USAID support for family planning in Peru. It discusses the consequences of USAID's position on emergency contraception in Peru and civil society's reaction to USAID's policy.  The document, produced with translation and editing support from IWHC, is an adaptation for U.S. audiences of the original document published in Spanish by PROMSEX in July, 2007, entitled, "Las migajas bajo el mantel: la política fundamentalista de USAID y el caso de Anticoncepción Oral de Emergencia (AOE) en el Perú "

Meeting Women Where They Are: Grupo Curumim's work with midwives and adolescents in northeastern Brazil

For the past 16 years, Paula and her colleagues at Curumim, based in the northeastern city of Recife, have been doing just that. Read more>>

IWHC in Latin America>>

The Latin American feminist movement has grown substantially in size and influence over the last 25 years, often in the face of strong, fundamentalist opposition. Joined by a new generation of young leaders who are committed to sexual and reproductive rights as key aspects of citizenship and social justice, advocates for women's health and rights are promoting new understandings of democracy and public health that recognize the importance of gender equality. IWHC's longstanding support for and solidarity with key organizations and advocates provide us with exceptional opportunities to support the growth of local, national, and regional movements for sexual and reproductive rights, and build women and young people's capacity to reach decision-makers and shape public policies.
