Mujer y Salud en Uruguay-MYSU
(Women and Health in Uruguay)
Founded in 1995, as a network of Uruguayan organizations dedicated to promoting women's and young people's sexual and reproductive health and rights in Uruguay, today, MYSU is a separately incorporated organization. For the past six years, MYSU has worked tirelessly to legalize abortion in Uruguay. Last year, with leadership from MYSU, the Senate approved a comprehensive sexual and reproductive health bill. If passed into law, this bill would legalize abortion in the first trimester and require that public and private healthcare institutions provide abortion services; create policies to provide universal access to contraceptives; and mandate the government develop a national reproductive health policies and programs.
The development of the 2007 sexual and reproductive health bill builds on MYSU’s 2002-2004 campaign for a similar bill, which was defeated in the Senate by four votes but represented tremendous progress for women's health and rights in Uruguay. The earlier bill succeeded in building public support and engaged mass civic participation around the promotion and defense of sexual and reproductive rights.
Recognizing the significance of MYSU's successes for the whole Latin American region, IWHC has supported the network since 2002. For more information, visit MYSU's website.
