Elige

Elige, a feminist youth organization comprised of young women and men, is a leading advocate for young people’s sexual and reproductive rights in Mexico and throughout Central America.

In Central America, only a few of the youth organizations work broadly on sexual and reproductive health issues. Organizations that do focus on sexual and reproductive health rarely work directly with youth. To bridge this gap, IWHC supported Elige to organize a capacity-building workshop in 2007, which brought together 19 youth groups to learn about sexual and reproductive health and rights. Elige continues to collaborate with these youth organizations to advocate for the health and rights of young people in Central America, including through formalizing their membership in RedLac, a large regional youth network. Elige also continues to work nationally. For example, following Mexico City’s 2007 decision to legalize abortion in the first trimester, Elige trained hospital employees—including receptionists, nurses, and other providers—on how to best meet the needs of young women seeking abortions.
