DECIDIR-Coalición de Jóvenes por la Ciudadania Sexual
(Youth Coalition for Sexual Citizenship)
Established in 2003, Decidir is a network of young Mexican activists, men and women between the ages of 24-34, committed to providing their peers with accurate and complete information on abortion. Decidir seeks to engage young people as equal partners and stakeholders in developing public policies to support access to safe abortion and ensure that the movement for safe abortion incorporates young people's perspectives.
While many of IWHC’s partners work to improve access to safe abortion, Decidir is one of the few that focuses on young people. Most of the women who seek abortion services from unskilled, unlicensed providers are between the ages of 15 and 30. In response to the needs of young people, IWHC is supporting Decidir to create a youth-friendly "toolbox" of educational and training materials on the right to safe and legal abortion so that young people may be more informed about and more engaged in the abortion debate. The toolbox will include a guide for supporting young women who elect to have an abortion, a guide for men, and an educational video which will address the unique needs of young women in the region. IWHC has supported Decidir since 2005.
