Católicas por el Derecho a Decidir, Córdoba-CDD-Córdoba
(Catholics for the Right to Decide, Córdoba)
CDD-Cordoba works locally, nationally, and regionally to reconcile widely-held Catholic views with the need to expand access to contraception and safe abortion, recognize sexual diversity and women’s human rights, and stop violence against women. Founded in 1993, CDD-Cordoba is one of Argentina's two CDD chapters.
CDD-Cordoba’s contribution to legal reform on abortion is particularly important given the uniquely favorable context for legalizing abortion in Argentina. Argentina has a strong federal sexual and reproductive health program and has appointed Supreme Court justices who publicly favor the decriminalization of abortion. Increasingly, the Argentinean public also supports decriminalization.
Since 2005, CDD-Cordoba has led the Campaign for the Right to Legal, Safe, and Free Abortion. The highly-publicized Campaign received the support of national celebrities, including artists and politicians, who spoke out in favor of legal and safe abortion. In 2007, the Campaign presented a proposal for legal reform on abortion before Congress. With IWHC’s support, CDD-Cordoba will broaden the base of support for legal reform among health care providers and continue to publicize this campaign.
IWHC has supported CDD-Cordoba intermittently since 2003.
