PROMSEX: Access to Abortion and Contraception are Human Rights

 Free Choice Restricted Promsex publication
Promsex publication on USAID policies on emergency contraception in Peru

Founded by a group of leading Peruvian advocates and physicians, the Center for the Promotion and Defense of Sexual and Reproductive Rights (Centro de Promoción y Defensa de los Derechos Sexuales y Reproductivos or PROMSEX) is a feminist organization that promotes and protects sexual and reproductive rights and health in Peru through policy reform, particularly on access to safe abortion.

Abortion is highly restricted in Peru and is rarely available in public hospitals even under circumstances where it is legal. Nonetheless, abortion is widely practiced and an estimated 400,000 Peruvian women undergo unsafe, clandestine abortions annually. Peru has the third highest maternal mortality rate Latin America and the Caribbean, with nearly 50,000 women in Peru either dying or suffering serious complications after an illegal abortion each year.

PROMSEX encourages public debate on abortion in Peru and works to frame access to abortion as a public health and human rights issue. PROMSEX coordinates with the women’s movement and grassroots organizations providing educational materials that advocate for safe, legal abortion. In partnership with health care providers, medical and legal associations, and civil society organizations, PROMSEX works to ensure that women are receiving complete and accurate information on the availability and access to safe and legal abortion.

IWHC has supported PROMSEX since the organization’s inception in 2005.
