Movimiento Manuela Ramos: Community Health Interventions with Women and Young People

Founded in Lima, Peru in 1978, Movimiento Manuela Ramos (Manuela Ramos Movement) has grown from a small grassroots organization to a regional leader in promoting women’s health and rights. Movimiento Manuela Ramos focuses on promoting gender equality and sexual and reproductive rights, stopping violence against women, and enabling women to become economically independent and politically active.

With IWHC’s support, Movimiento Manuela Ramos has expanded its work with young people, and particular young women, in Pucallpa, a rapidly growing town located in the Central Amazon of Peru. The main industries in Pucallpa are timber and gas, which offer few employment options for young women. As a result, they are particularly vulnerable to sexual exploitation, sexual violence, sexually transmitted infections, and unwanted pregnancies. Movimiento Manuela Ramos collaborates with youth organizations and peer educators in Pucallpa to give young people information about their rights and health.

Movimiento Manuela Ramos's work in Pucallpa builds on a model it pioneered in the 1990s, which engaged rural indigenous women in identifying their reproductive health needs and creating responsive community health interventions. IWHC has partnered with Movimiento Manuela Ramos since 1989.
