(Network of Young Women)
Recognizing the potential political power of young people and their need to be involved in the political process, a group of young women ages 16 to 30, from nine countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, created the regional network, AMJ. AMJ identifies key issues affecting young Latin American women and analyzes how programmatic and policy responses to these issues are developed in each country. Armed with this knowledge and training, network members build their capacity for civic participation at the national, regional, and international levels and promote recognition of young women’s human rights throughout the region.
In 2006, IWHC gave its first grant to AMJ to convene a workshop in the Caribbean to build the skills of local activists and identify new network members. Participants came from the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Puerto Rico. In early 2008, IWHC provided financial support to AMJ for a similar workshop in Peru that brought together young women activists from the Andean region. This workshop provided training on how communication strategies and technology can be used to strengthen local advocacy efforts.
