IES: Public Debate and Education on Sexuality and Reproductive Health

 Health Education at IES
Young people with IES educational materials

Founded in Lima, Peru in 1991, the Institute for Education and Health (Instituto de Educación y Salud or IES) specializes in research and training in sexuality and reproductive health, with an emphasis on strengthening youth organizations and their advocacy capacities.  IES is an active member of the Peruvian AIDS Network, Red SIDA Peru, and trains peer educators, teachers, and health professionals in gender and generational sensitivity. IES also works directly with young people, educating them on sexuality and reproductive health, breaking down gender barriers and biases, and empowering them to participate in public policy discussions and to develop their own community health initiatives.

IES encourages public debate on sexual and reproductive rights and health by hosting monthly discussions on topics related to health and rights—particularly those affecting Peruvian youth—and disseminating electronic and print publications on these issues. IES monitors municipal policies that affect the sexual and reproductive health services available to young people and supports public policies that promote healthy sexual lifestyles, gender equality, human rights, and diverse sexualities and cultures.

IWHC has supported the Instituto de Educación y Salud since 2002.
