IWHC in Asia and the Middle East |

Since 1983, IWHC has worked in collaboration with partner organizations throughout Asia and the Middle East, including in Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Turkey.
By 2020, there will be 669 million young people ages 15 to 24 in Asia—yet across the region, most young people do not have basic information about pregnancy (including safe abortion), HIV transmission, or their legal rights. IWHC works with partners that support comprehensive sexuality education for and the leadership development of young people. We also work with partners who strive to pass and implement sexual and reproductive rights and health policies, including those that support access to safe and legal abortion.

Since 1971 abortion has been permitted in India for a broad variety of reasons. Throughout the country, women who can afford health care in private hospitals have fairly good access to sexual and reproductive health care services, including abortion. But in rural and poverty-stricken areas, where people rely on public health care facilities called Primary Health Centers, access is more limited, to devastating effect. In India, rates for maternal mortality are highest among poor rural women. India has the largest number of deaths from unsafe abortions in the world.
