“Everyone can make a difference. Even if you don’t sit in parliament, if you don’t sit in the government or the UN, in those networks within the circle of your life, you can make a difference.” - Graça Machel, 2009 Gala Honoree

“The Coalition is giving women around the world access to the things that they need to lead healthy and fulfilling lives. As the father of two daughters, I can’t think of anything more vital.” - The Honorable Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg

“The Coalition has created a global network of hundreds of advocates and thousands of allies. Together, they have become a force to be reckoned with from Brasilia to Abuja, Dhaka to Washington and the United Nations.” - Charlayne Hunter-Gault, 2009 Gala Emcee

"I have come to talk to you about how school can change a girl’s life. I know because I changed my life through education. Now, I have power." - Sunita Rathore, 2009 Gala Presenter

On February 10, 2009, the International Women's Health Coalition (IWHC) celebrated 25 years of progress at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City. Hosted by journalist Charlayne Hunter-Gault, IWHC’s annual gala raised over $1 million. We honored human rights activist Graça Machel for her leadership in advancing human rights worldwide, particularly for women and young people, and heard from speakers including The Honorable Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, youth leader Sunita Rathore, The Honorable Timothy E. Wirth and Gala Chair Diana L. Taylor. Lead sponsors included the DeBeers Group.

The gala dinner was written up in the New York Times' "Sunday Styles" section. Click here for the newspaper clip.

Gala Honoree Graça Machel was unable to be present at the event, so she sent a video message to the gathering.

We caught the International Women's Health Coalition Board of Directors Chair Brian Brink on video at the end of the Gala night. In this video he reflects on the evening and his hopes for the upcoming year.
