I agree with Nicholas Kristof that humanitarian efforts must be a central priority for the next U.S. president. But U.S. diplomacy and foreign-assistance funding will have the greatest benefit if we invest broadly in the sexual and reproductive health and rights of women and young people.

That will require the next president and Congress to make significant changes in the current global AIDS programming. These changes would make HIV prevention far more effective and include support for comprehensive sexuality education, reproductive health services, and male and female condoms for everyone.

Only with this sort of investment will we end the AIDS pandemic, prevent tens of millions of unwanted pregnancies and unsafe abortions, and lay the foundation for societies based on human rights and social justice.
