"I As a Woman": Discrimination & Empowerment in Cameroun

"On my own, I could not fight the fight...SWAAC Cameroun...made me understand that I as a woman have to fight for my rights."These are the words of Joy, a widow whose experience of stigma and discrimination after her husband's death resulted in her loss of strength and economic independence.

In this video, she tells the story of how she empowered herself to overcome these obstacles, with the support of the Society for Women and AIDS in Africa-Cameroun (SWAAC).

SWAAC is a Pan-African, non-governmental, non-sectarian, and non-profit organization based in Cameroun. It is a women's organization working in collaboration with men to promote the health of African women by identifying causes and effects of HIV and AIDS.

Make the health and rights of women and young people a global priority

The International Women's Health Coalition (IWHC) responds to United Nations General Secretary Ban Ki Moon's question: "If you had the opportunity to speak to the world leaders, what would you say?" Our staff and partners from around the world give their answers.

SANGRAM: Sex Workers' Rights Are Human Rights

Based in a rural community in Indias Maharashtra State, SANGRAM works to ensure equal access to HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, care and support: Over 6,000 women in rural India have participated in HIV testing as a result of these efforts. Drawing on 15 years of work to empower marginalized communities to claim their rights, SANGRAM is becoming an increasingly strong advocate nationally, and globally for health policies and programs that are responsive to the real-life needs of local communities.

On a recent trip to India, International Women's Health Coalition staff collaborated with SANGRAM and local sex worker advocates to produce IWHCs first short documentary.

Female Condoms: Demand and Distribution

With the FDA approval of the new female condom (FC2) in the United States, there has been a lot of press about the advantages and challenges of female condoms. The biggest complaints that remain since the original female condom (FC) went on the market in 1993 are: FCs are too expensive and women don't really want to use them.

This video gives the perspectives of Kate Bourne and Jen Wilen, staff members of the International Women's Health Coalition, on what the real world demand for female condoms is like and what the challenges to distribution are.

This interview about the criminalization of HIV and parental consent for HIV testing was shot by IWHC staff member Jen Wilen while they were in Kribi, Cameroun for an advocacy training.
