RE: "U.N. to Cut Estimate of AIDS Epidemic"

To the Editor:

The reduced estimates of HIV-AIDS's prevalence by the United Nations' AIDS agency [front page, Nov. 20] must not detract from the world's effort to stem the HIV-AIDS pandemic. Even if the epidemic has been "ebbing," 33 million people are living with HIV-AIDS, and 2.5 million new infections occur each year.

Women and youths are most vulnerable: Several thousand youths are infected each day, and rates of infection among women are increasing in all regions. We must ensure access to prevention and treatment for all.
