Letter to the Editor

To the Editor:

"Broad Accord Reached at Global Environment Meeting" (news article, Sept. 4) mentions the dispute over women's health care, which almost brought final negotiations to a halt. But it doesn't mention that this disruption was led by the United States.

Just as it did at the other recent major United Nations conferences on H.I.V. and AIDS and on children, the Bush administration teamed up with the Vatican and some conservative Islamic countries in opposing women's entitlement to safe, affordable and voluntary reproductive health services, which are essential for "sustainable development."

Once again, the United States has found common cause not with women, but with countries that consistently curtail women's rights.
