CMNHSA: Working to Ensure the Health of India's Women and Children

For
every 100,000 live births in India, 540 women die and dozens more
experience chronic or even life-threatening conditions as a result of
poor health care during pregnancy. IWHC supports the recently
established Coalition for Maternal-Neonatal Health and Safe Abortion
(CMNHSA) to broaden advocacy for women and children's health in India,
including their access to sexual and reproductive health services. Read

Anita's Story
At 16 years old, Anita followed in the footsteps of her mother and
became a devdasis, or sex worker. She ultimately became HIV-positive
and lost her beloved child to pneumonia three months after it was born.
The organization SANGRAM supported her and arranged for her to receive
anti-retroviral treatments. Now, she works with SANGRAM to support
others living with HIV/AIDS and to empower more devdasis to use
condoms. IWHC made its first grant to SANGRAM in 2006.

IWHC Young Visionary: Neha Sood
Around the globe, young women are mobilizing and making their voices
heard. The women profiled in IWHC's Young Visionaries series are at the
forefront of that movement. Although each one has a unique story and
voice, they are connected by their common vision for a more equitable
world.
Neha Sood, 26, is Program Coordinator at Creating Resources for
Empowerment in Action (CREA) in Delhi, India, where she works on
exchange programs, training workshops, thematic meetings and creating
public education material on issues of sexuality, reproductive and
sexual rights, violence against women and women's rights. As Neha
describes, "CREA believes that human rights apply to young people, just
like everyone else, and that young people have the power within
themselves to demand and realize their human rights."
