ACAFEM's mission is to promote the co-operation of medical women in Cameroun; to promote the general interests of medical women; to develop friendship and understanding between medical women throughout the world; and to offer medical women the opportunity to meet so as to confer upon questions concerning the health and wellbeing of humanity. The activities of ACAFEM are only realized in the interest of medicine. ACAFEM is politically neutral, non-sectarian and a registered non-government association.
ACAFEM is an oranization made up of currently practicing female medical doctors and has relations with the Ministry of Health . Both of these factors are requirements for the successful implementation of youth-friendly health services. Not only can ACAFEM provide the necessary training to the health personnel who will staff the hospital youth services and to the surrounding communities, but their highly-respected professions invoke a sense of trust and buy-in from the communities they work with.
ACAFEM members openly acknowledge that they currently provide confidential HIV testing services to youth, even without the youth-friendly services yet available in public hospitals or clinics. Project ACAFEM is working on the development and implementation of youth-friendly health services (YFHS) in an already existing hospital in the Nkoldongo Health District in Yaounde. This pilot site was the first of its kind in Cameroun, not only providing youth-friendly health services, including reduced fees for adolescents and convenient hours, but actively promoting service uptake among both youth and adults in the surrounding communities.
