International Women's Health Coalition Aims to Reframe Debate at
International AIDS Conference in Toronto
Expert Commentary Available on Making the Global AIDS Response Work for Women
New York, NY - Leaders with the International Women's Health Coalition (IWHC) take their action agenda for global AIDS policy to Toronto next week, in an effort to shift the dialogue on women and HIV/AIDS away from the problem and towards the solution.
Together with colleagues from several countries and diverse backgrounds, IWHC has worked to shape and promote "With Women Worldwide: A Compact to End HIV/AIDS" since October 2005. More than 260 organizations have endorsed this list of concrete and achievable actions.
As part of this effort, IWHC is also co-coordinating "In Her Own Words: Violations of Women's Human Rights and HIV/AIDS," featuring six panelists from India, sub-Saharan Africa, and the United States-both policy analysts and activists living with HIV/AIDS. As the women tell their stories, they will not only illuminate failures that account for the pandemic's disproportionate impact on women and girls, but also key points of intervention going forward. The event will take place on the Global Village Main Stage, Monday, August 14th, from 6:30 to 8:00 PM.

Adrienne Germain, President of IWHC. Adrienne has worked for 35 years to promote women's opportunities, health, and rights in developing countries. By making the health and rights of women central she helped revolutionize the way the world views population policy. She was one of the first to anticipate the toll that HIV/AIDS would take on the lives of women and girls and envision what would be needed to abate the epidemic.

Kate Bourne, Vice President for International Policy and Regional Programs. Having worked with women leaders in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, Kate has first-hand knowledge of the challenges countries face in preventing HIV among women and girls and caring for those who are already infected. Kate has extensive international experience and most recently worked with the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative.

Zonibel Woods, Senior Advisor for International Policy. Zonibel is a policy strategist who leads IWHC's global effort to ensure that United Nations policy and programming responds realistically to the needs of women and girls. Zonibel is well known for mobilizing support from advocates, policymakers and other opinion leaders and critiquing policies as they develop.
