BRIAN BRINK, SOUTH AFRICAN MD, TO CHAIR
INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S HEALTH COALITION

Board of Directors announces officer elections and other appointments

On June 12, 2007, the Board of Directors of the International Women's Health Coalition (IWHC) elected Paul Zuckerman will continue as Treasurer/Secretary.

The Board named With Women Worldwide initiative. This major advocacy effort aims to make HIV/AIDS policies and programs work for women and young people by ensuring that their sexual and reproductive rights and health are prioritized.

In her years as Chair, Ms. Marton fostered visionary Board leadership and was the driving force behind IWHC's highly successful annual galas. During Ms. Marton's tenure, IWHC increased its focus on the growing threat of HIV/AIDS for women and developed its path-breaking With Women Worldwide initiative. "I am very proud to leave IWHC in such a strong position and in such capable hands. With a powerful team behind him, Dr. Brink is perfectly positioned to take the Coalition to the next level," commented Ms. Marton.

"As a physician and an African I see the daily injustice of what it is to be a woman without rights and health, and how often we turn away from their suffering," said Dr. Brink. "IWHC has never turned away. In fact, the Coalition is one of the most powerful voices advocating on behalf of girls and women. I can think of no greater honor than to lead the IWHC Board as we invest in and push for practical, effective policies and programs-at national and global levels."

IWHC is an innovator on women's rights and health. With an annual budget of $6 million and 25 staff, IWHC bridges two worlds - the international women's health and rights movement and large mainstream population and health institutions. The Coalition:

  • Provides grants and professional partnership to help build local organizations in Africa, Asia and Latin America
  • Draws on their experience and leadership to leverage national and international institutions, policies and budgets to secure universal sexual and reproductive health services and promote and protect the rights of women and young people.
