(Catholics for the Right to Decide-Latin American Network)CDD- Latin American Network is a feminist network committed to the promotion and defense of sexual and reproductive rights based on justice, Catholic theology, and feminism. Comprised of seven groups from six countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Mexico), CDD- Latin American Network members work to reconcile widely-held Catholic views with the need to expand access to contraception and safe abortion, recognize sexual diversity and women’s human rights, and stop violence against women through regional and national advocacy strategies.Recognizing the importance of indigenous communities in Latin America, CDD- Latin American Network works closely with indigenous Andean and Amazonian women and their communities to develop seminars for women’s rights activists on Andean and Amazonian world views and how these communities understand life and human rights. Some women indigenous leaders have not be vocal women’s rights advocates because indigenous communities rely strongly on collective rights as opposed to individual rights. The seminars, the first of which was hosted in Bolivia hosted in October 2007, help indigenous leaders and feminist leaders find links between the two movements. In 2008, the second seminar will bring together 32 women’s rights activists from Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia. CDD-LA uses these seminars to build collaboration between feminist and indigenous activists. IWHC has supported CDD-LA intermittently since 1998. |
