Association pour la Promotion de l’Autonomie et des Droits de la Fille/Femme (APAD) promotes the rights and autonomy of young mothers and survivors of early and forced marriage in Maroua, Cameroun. They empower young mothers, survivors of early and forced marriage in Maroua to share their experiences and support other victims.

 

APAD's projects include:

  • Train 150 survivors of early and forced marriage on the origins, causes and consequences of this practice; gender equality and human rights of the girl child; and the importance of social and economic independence
  • Train traditional leaders and communities on causes and consequences of early and forced marriage and human rights of girls so they can pass on their newfound comprehension to parents and speak out against this traditional practice
  • Train APAD members on use of sewing machines for embroidery so they can afford to be economically independent and buy national identity cards, enabling them to access the judicial system, seek employment and travel freely

Impact:

  • Trained 150 survivors and empowered them to speak out against this practice and stand on their own two feet
  • Educated 5,000 community members on causes and consequences of early and forced marriage and human rights
  • Trained 17 influential traditional leaders to speak to parents of young girls to convince them to refrain from marrying them off and insist they remain in school
