IWHC Letter in Support of the Office of Global Women's Issues |
June 3, 2009
The Honorable Howard Berman
United
States
House of Representatives
Washington, DC 20515
Dear Mr.
Chairman:
On behalf of
the International Women's Health Coalition, I would like to express our support
and appreciation for the inclusion of provisions authorizing the
Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women's Issues in the State Department
Reauthorization bill (H.R. 2410). We
congratulate you for your leadership in elevating women's health and rights
issues in the national dialogue and recognizing their central importance to
effective U.S.
foreign policy.
In order to
maximize U.S. investments,
women's health and rights should be the centerpiece of U.S. foreign
assistance goals. These investments
would help to secure a just and healthy life for women and girls, and ensure advancement
in areas where the United States has the most at stake, such as health,
education, economic development, human rights and human security.
Thanks to
your leadership, we are one critical step closer to ensuring continued progress
in these important areas. The
multi-faceted and complex issues that women and girls face can best be
addressed through increased coordination and leveraging of resources in the
various bureaus in the State Department and USAID, supported by the Office of
Global Women's Issues.
Investments in the health and rights
of women and girls make investments in developing countries more effective.
Thank you for your leadership and demonstrated commitment to women and girls around
the world. We look forward to working
with you and your staff to ensure this important provision becomes law.
Sincerely,
Adrienne
Germain
President, International
Women's Health Coalition
