Participants at IWHC's first Advocacy in Practice training

IWHC’s Advocacy in Practice (AiP) training is an intensive multi-day workshop that supports participants to develop the leadership skills needed to effectively advocate for sexual and reproductive rights and health at the national and international levels. AiP brings together burgeoning advocates from a variety of contexts to share, strategize, and learn from one another, and from IWHC’s staff and colleagues. Each AiP coincides with an important regional conference or UN negotiation, and gives participants the opportunity to take what they’ve learned and put it into action. Since its inception in 2007, IWHC has trained 92 advocates from 41 countries.

During the trainings, groups of approximately fifteen participants gain:

  • Understanding of the core elements of advocacy, including goal-setting, media and communications strategies, and tailoring an advocacy agenda to meet specific goals;
  • Deepened knowledge of women's rights, human rights, international agreements on sexual and reproductive rights and health, and how youth movements can foster social change;
  • Practical application of this knowledge and these skills at  major UN and regional conferences;
  • The opportunity to meet new advocates, share experiences, and grow their global networks;
  • Skills that they can use when they return home to advocate with their local and national governments; and
  • A worldwide network of advocates with whom they will continue to collaborate and learn.

AiP trainees’ participation, including travel and lodging, is supported by IWHC. Following the trainings, IWHC continues to work with AiP alumni as colleagues, allies, and trainers for future AiPs.

Here’s what some of our participants had to say about the training:

"Participating in the training and then going on to advocate at the Commission on the Status of Women was a great learning experience. I got to work with an amazing group of people, share experiences, work on common goals, and see the result of partnership. I am more aware of how much has been accomplished in and how much farther we need to go in the movement.”

“I enjoyed all the sessions. The training is informative, interactive, and dynamic. Presenters were great!”

“The session on how the UN works was very useful in helping me to understand which situations and moments are best for me to implement my strategies.”

“The mapping the opposition exercise was very new for me and very meaningful. It was thorough and pragmatic.”
