Centro de Estudios y Promocion Afro-Peruano (LUNDÚ), or the Center for Afro-Peruvian Studies and Empowerment, founded in 2001, is a non-profit organization that promotes the development of the population of African descent by combating racism, sexism and other types of discrimination from an inter-cultural, inter-generational and gender perspective.It advocates for the human rights of people of African descent and contributes to the development of programs, laws and policies that benefit this population.Its multi- and inter-disciplinary team conducts educational, artistic and research activities in coordination with local, national and international organizations.
 LUNDU's work contributes to the creation of an inclusive society free
from racism, which respects the human rights that provide opportunities
to all people in a democratic, equitable and just manner. IWHC has
supported LUNDU since 2004.
LUNDÚ promotes and develops grassroots organizing among the Afro-Peruvian population, especially women and youth; develops artistic and creative projects, utilizing art as a strategy for creation and change; designs and implements education and development programs and activities aimed at improving the life conditions of our target population; promotes research, academic debate, and the sharing of information through publications and documentaries.
Projects
- Inclusive, Anti-Racist Education: This project's long-term
goal is to promote improvements to quality of life among Afro-Peruvian
children and youth by creating equitable conditions for access to basic
and higher education. One of the short-term goals is to improve the
conditions for access to basic education for urban and rural
Afro-Peruvian communities. Another objective is related to promoting
inclusive, anti-racist education policies with an emphasis on the
Afro-Peruvian population. The third objective is to promote improvements
to quality of life among Afro-Peruvians through access to a scholarship
fund for higher education.
- Network Of Afro-Peruvian Youth: Composed of 20 youth leaders
from El Carmen district, Chincha province. They promote human rights,
sexual health, reproductive health and the fight against racism.Black
AestheticsThe "Black Aesthetics" program aims to improve the quality of
life of Afro-Peruvian children and adolescents by improving educational
conditions, access to higher education and the development of
micro-enterprise initiatives. Objectives: contribute to strengthening
the identity and self-esteem of children; develop skills to address
racism, violence and exclusion; promote new paradigms, utilizing art as
the methodology, especially the plastic arts, music and the performing
arts. This project is designed to work with boys, girls and adolescents
in marginalized urban areas, especially in El Callao in Lima. However,
in 2008, this initiative was moved and also started operations in El
Carmen-Chincha.
- Advisory Center: This project is designed to develop
advocacy actions for sexual rights and reproductive rights. Here, the
members can develop advocacy skills through training, sensitization and
group organizing. The project also aims, as a group, to develop skills
to facilitate other groups: boys, girls and adolescents, as a mechanism
for dialogue and education within the HR framework. The Advisory Center
is located in El Carmen. At the center, the Network of Afro-Peruvian
Youth provides assistance to the population and coordinates activities
for the community.Objective: to help strengthen grassroots organizing as
well as rebuild the life plan of the rural and urban Afro-Peruvian
population—especially youth and girls—from a development focus with an
ethnic and gender perspective.
- Scholarship Fund: Aimed at supporting higher education and technical education for Afro-Peruvian boys, girls and adolescents.
- "No More Racism" Campaign: The objective of the “Racismo
Nunca Más” (No More Racism) campaign, launched in 2006, is to conduct
advocacy and information activities in the media and where legislation
is made. These activities promote clear actions to combat existing
racism directed at the Afro-Peruvian population, indigenous people, and
other people and groups that are discriminated against.
