Five-Year Review of the Fourth World Conference on Women, New York, 2000 Print E-mail
The five-year implementation review of the Fourth World Conference on Women (Beijing Plus Five) took place at UN Headquarters in New York on June 5–9, 2000. Feminist advocates and activists from more than 1,000 nongovernmental organizations met with government delegates from 148 countries to review progress made since the 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women and to agree on further actions needed to accelerate implementation of the Beijing Declaration and the Platform for Action.

IWHC and HERA, an international network of feminists, organized a large coalition of progressive nongovernmental organizations interested in health and rights (Coalition for Health and Rights), which met daily during the negotiations to exchange information and coordinate lobbying and press strategies. The group's activities, along with those of many progressive country delegates, protected the original Beijing health and rights agreements and resulted in a number of forward-looking measures—particularly on adolescents' access to services, maternal mortality, and violence against women.
