>>Available in Word and PDF

Summary: Delivered by Adrienne Germain, President, IWHC, at "HIV/AIDS and Reproductive Health: Everybody's Business," a workshop convened by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, The Netherlands. First, reviews the evolution of concepts of sexual and reproductive health and rights and summarizes key internationally agreed language on these topics, outlining progress made and challenges remaining in three key areas: (1) pregnancy and delivery, (2) contraception and abortion, and (3) HIV/AIDS and other STDs in girls and women. Next, proposes actions that can be taken at country level to strengthen health sysems to ensure women's and young people's sexual and reproductive health, including protection against HIV/AIDS. Finally, highlights urgent realities of girls and women's lives that merit international attention and advocacy, particularly in light of the HIV/AIDS pandemic and the factors that render women and girls disproportionately vulnerable (11 pages).
