The statistics are staggering: close to two-thirds of the more
than one million Kenyans infected with HIV are female, according to
data released by the National AIDS Control Council in 2007. Newly
revised UNAIDS estimates show that women and girls in Lesotho are 50
percent more likely to be HIV positive than their male counterparts.
