New rapid H.I.V. tests in poor American communities offer great hope. Primary prevention actions must also be mounted to reduce the excessive risk of H.I.V. and AIDS that women and girls face. It is only through comprehensive sex education, employment and zero tolerance for sexual coercion and violence that we can prevent women from becoming infected.

Feminists Have Fought in AIDS Battle

While Pius Kamau's column touches on the key underlying issues of basic gender inequities driving the AIDS pandemic, he misses the larger point. Feminists, together with doctors, scientists, teachers, social workers and many others, have been hard at work globally for decades to empower girls and women and provide them with comprehensive health care and education services.
