Advocacy in Practice
An AiP participant presents during
the global advocacy training
Twenty-one activists from around the globe, all of whom work to generate policies and programs that promote and protect the rights and health of women and young people, gathered in New York from February 20 to March 1, 2008 to attend IWHC's fourth Advocacy in Practice (AiP) training. The training was concurrent with the 52nd Commission on the Status of Women at the United Nations (UN), of which the priority theme was financing for gender equality and the empowerment of women.

Participants—from nascent activists to individuals with years of experience working towards solving the urgent health and rights challenges faced by the world's women and young people—came together from 12 countries around the world: Cameroun, Nigeria, India, Philippines, Peru, Pakistan, South Africa, the United Kingdom, the United States, Brazil, Kyrgyzstan, and Ecuador.

The purpose of the training was to provide instruction to participants about the core elements of advocacy; foster an exploratory discussion on the human rights of women and youth; and investigate the history of movements as a force for social change. The AiP also included discussions on confronting the opposition, and how to build powerful movements by joining together diverse constituents, such as men, youth leaders, and positive women.

After the training, participants utilized the skills they had learned and the knowledge that was imparted to them—both by those leading the training and by their colleague participants—by standing together at  the UN and negotiating for what they believe should be achieved at the 52nd CSW.
