February - March 2007 Advocacy in Practice: 51st Commission on the Status of Women (CSW)
New York, USA
|
Participants at IWHC's first Advocacy
in Practice training session |
Fifteen young men and women from fourteen countries around the world joined together in New York at the time of the United Nations 51st Commission on the Status of Women. The theme of the session was the "elimination of all forms of discrimination and violence against the girl child."
All of the young activists that participated in the training work in the field of human rights, sexual rights, youth, reproductive rights and HIV/AIDS. After several days of intensive training, the participants attended the UN session, where they advocated for an agenda to take effective action against severe threats to girls' and young women's sexual and reproductive health and rights, including child marriage, HIV infection, unintended pregnancy, complications in childbirth, sexual violence, and pervasive gender inequality.

The young advocates' evaluation of the training indicated that they had increased their advocacy capacity and learned new skills to promote their agendas at the policy table and impact policy development. This positive feedback encouraged IWHC to organize a second Advocacy in Practice training session at the 4th Asia Pacific Conference on Reproductive and Sexual Health and Rights (APCRSH) in Hyderabad, India.
