54th Commission on the Status of Women, New York, United States – February 2010

During the training, run by IWHC’s Program Officer for International Policy, Alexandra Garita, the AiPers discussed the significance of global agreements on women’s health and rights,  effective messaging on sexual and reproductive health and rights issues, and advocacy strategies at the UN and in country they can put into practice following the training. The AiP participants then spent a week meeting with delegates at the UN during the 54th Commission on the Status of Women, presenting on panels, and visiting Washington, DC to advocate for comprehensive sexuality education.

Fourth Africa Conference on Sexual Health and Rights (AFSHR), Addis Abba, Ethiopia - February 2010

After the conclusion of AFSHR, a major regional conference on sexual and reproductive rights and health  in Addis Abba, Ethiopia, Advocates for Youth and IWHC co-hosted an AiP training.  Participants learned about how to use regional agreements, such as the Maputo Protocol of Action [link to PDF download], to foster political will and action on issues related to youth health and rights. Participants from Cameroun, Nigeria, Ethiopia and South Africa got together to develop country-specific action plans, and are continuing to work together to increase access to comprehensive sexuality education, female condoms and health services in their communities and countries.   

4th Asia Pacific Conference on Reproductive and Sexual Health and Rights (APCRSH), Hyderabad, India - October 2007

Participants spent three intensive days learning about international policy agreements and techniques for advocacy at the United Nations and other policy forums.  They also explored the particular issues around sexual and reproductive health and rights that were relevant to the Asia Pacific Conference on Reproductive and Sexual Health (APCRSH).  For example, each young woman presented to the group on issues including abstinence, safe abortion, HIV/AIDS, and domestic violence. They also wrote and issued a press release protesting the ban against sex education that was recently imposed by 12 Indian State governments. Several of the participants were quoted in major media outlets, including The Hindu and The Tribune (India).
