Five-Year Review of the International Conference on Population and Development, New York, 1999 Print E-mail

The five-year review of the implementation of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD Plus Five) Programme of Action took place at UN headquarters in New York on June 30–July 2, 1999. At this meeting, conference delegates identified key actions needed for accelerated implementation of the ICPD Programme of Action and new benchmarks for measuring progress toward the goals of the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development.

To coordinate the lobbying strategy of progressive nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), HERA (an international network of feminists) brought together 81 women's health NGOs to form the Women's Coalition for the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD). This coalition met each morning to exchange information, coordinate lobbying and press strategies, and produce advocacy materials. The combined efforts of this coalition, together with those of supportive country delegations, resulted in agreement on a set of concrete targets and benchmarks to accelerate the implementation of the ICPD Programme of Action on provision of reproductive health services; access to a wide range of contraceptive methods, and to essential obstetric care by skilled attendants; and prevention of STIs, including HIV/AIDS, among young people. In addition, governments agreed to train and equip health providers to ensure that legal abortion is both safe and accessible.
